To all English teachers,
I am very much delighted to write this piece of writing to you and I hope you get benefit from it. This article will focus on a very interesting technique for English learners. It will contain: First, a short introduction to define (CALL). Second, a short paragraph to discuss CALL advantages, and third, 3 examples of CALL activities[/ALIGN]

[ALIGN=LEFT] First, what does (CALL) mean Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is a form of computer-based learning which carries two important features; bidirectional learning and individualized learning. It is not a method. CALL materials are tools for learning. Above all, the focus of CALL is learning, and not teaching. CALL materials are used in teaching to facilitate the language learning process. Furthermore, it is a student-centered accelerated learning material which promotes self-paced accelerated learning.
Second, there are 4 main advantages of CALL; motivation, adapting learning to the student, authenticity, and critical thinking skills. Generally speaking, the use of technology inside or outside the classroom tends to make the class more interesting. Besides, adapting learning to the student .Computers can give a new role to teaching materials. In addition, adapting to the student usually means that the student controls the pace of the learning, but it also means that students can make choices in what and how to learn by skipping unnecessary items or doing remedial work on difficult concepts. Furthermore, Authenticity in language learning means the opportunity to interact in one or more of the four skills (reading, writing, listening ,and speaking) by using or producing texts meant for an audience in the target language, not the classroom. Finally, critical thinking skills . Use of computer technology in classrooms is generally reported to improve self-concept and mastery of basic skills, more student-centered learning and engagement in the learning process, more active processing resulting in higher-order thinking skills and better recall, gain confidence in directing their own learning. This is true for both language and non-language classrooms.
Finally, there are many activities for CALL such as: CALL activities for your classroom, E-creation by presentation software, E- connection , E-Extensions and E-Assessment .(see chart 1 ) I choose the most interesting one :[/ALIGN]

Nature of the activity : Vocabulary building
Task type: Following commands
Proficiency level: Any
Preparation and resources : Recording sound files , burning files
Time:15 minutes
Participant structure : Pairs
Learning-how-to-learn skill: Giving and following instructions

The teacher records a range of commands as sound files on his or her computer for example, ""touch something soft,"" ""walk to the wall,"" ""pick up your folders,"" etc. At least 40 different commands should be recorded. Once this is done, the teacher burns the individual sound files onto a CD and transfers the files to computers that the students will be using. When the class starts, the teacher divides the class into pairs . Student A makes sure Student B opens each file and carries out the first 20 commands. When Student B gets the command wrong, he or she stops. The activity continues until the last student is left . Then the roles are reversed , and Student A listens to each sound file and acts out the last 20 commands until only one student is left . The best Student A and B then square off against each other. This activity encourages the comprehension of verbs -"pick up,"" ""touch,"" ""grab,"" ""band,"" ""turn,"" ""wipe,"" ""bend,"" and provides an opportunity for students to familez themselves with sound files.
[ALIGN=LEFT][COLOR=red]Variations [/COLOR][/ALIGN]
Rather than giving instructions that require students to carry out physical acts, the teacher gives instructions and commands that require student to use the Internet for example , ""find a Web site on Japanese kendo"" or ""send your friend an e-mail message with the address of your Web site.""
Rather than using the sound files to practice commands, the teacher uses the chat function of Nicenet to enhance students" reading comprehension skills.
[COLOR=red]Activity 2[/COLOR] : What I Know , What I Don"t Know, What I"d Like to Know

Technology type : Internet
Nature of the activity : Brainstorming
Task type: Fill in the blanks
Proficiency level: Any
Preparation and resources : None
Time: 10-15 minutes
Participant structure : Group or whole class
Learning-how-to-learn skill: Reflecting on one"s knowledge base , compiling and categorizing information .
[ALIGN=LEFT][COLOR=red]Procedure [/COLOR][/ALIGN]
The teacher chooses a topic on which a unit is based, such as holidays , family , cooking, or school.
The teacher uses Microsoft Power Point to draw three columns titled "" Words I Know,"" "" Words I"m Not Sure About,"" and "words I Want To Know.""
The student groups at each computer are asked to copy the Power Point slide onto their computers.
Each group fills in the columns with as much information as they can with the aid of the internet .
Once each group is finished, the teacher directs each group to present what they have come up with.
The teacher and the class review what the group knows; answers, explains, or clarifies what they don"t know; and answers what they would like to know.
[ALIGN=LEFT][COLOR=red]Variations[/COLOR][/ALIGN]
The teacher displays the same table just described , but instead of asking groups to write down words they do or do not know related to the topic given, the teacher asks students to write down words related to content matter (math, social studies, science). Follow the same steps to complete the activity.
The teacher doesn"t leave it up to the students to think about the words or content that they may or may not know about a given topic. Here, the teacher provides specific words or content information and asks the students to discuss the words in a chat room and surf the Internet to fined out what the terms mean and then report back to the class.
